I'm going out for dinner and then I'm going to watch the first episode of Season 1 of El Principe , on Unimas, which was a huge hit in Spain and Europe. The basic plot: An anti-terror cop falls for the Muslim sister of the local North African drug lord while trying to infiltrate a terror cell and root out police corruption.

Javier Morey is sent to El Principe, a Spanish town on the North African coast surrounded by Morocco, on a secret mission: to infiltrate himself as the new chief inspector of the local police station under the suspicion that some of their own cops could be collaborating with Muslim extremist cells. What he finds will surprise him, but he will be caught in a crossroads when he begins to fall in love with Fatima, the younger sister of Faruq, the local drug baron.

    ... hearing before the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission in opposition to NextEra Energy, Inc.'s proposed purchase of Hawaiian Electric Industries. The commissioners voted unanimously last Friday afternoon to reject the deal. Next up, we're going to push for HEI to divest themselves of its monopoly, and advocate for public ownership, smart grid technology and distributed energy generation. Our state has a policy goal of attaining 100% renewable energy generation by the year 2045, and HEI has been an impediment to its ultimate achievement.

    My friend died in the early hours this morning from pancreatic cancer at age 49, surrounded by his family. It's yet to be formally announced by the U.S. House, but we got the call from his mother at 6:00 a.m. HST. I first met Mark when I was a graduate student at UH-Manoa and he was president of the Associated Students of the University of Hawaii. I later worked with him for 10 years in the State House.

    Mark was only 10 months into his first term in Washington when he was diagnosed with cancer, and by then it had already metastasized into his liver. Although he sought aggressive treatment, it was likely too late. He announced in May that he would not seek re-election, and entered hospice care three weeks ago. He is survived by his wife Sami, his two children, 12-year-old Matthew and 10-year-old Kalia, his parents Erik and Janice.

    I'm standing down for the rest of the day.

    I'd predict the Dems will do the "Trump is the Devil" hard sell on only a slightly lesser scale than the Repubs are hard selling "Clinton is the Devil".  It won't be 5 Trumps for every Clinton like the GOP "4 Days Hate" is 5 Clintons for every Trump...maybe 3-1?

    Hate to say it, but it's probably the right tactic too to get out the vote...nothing drives a fool to the polls like hate and fear. Love and hope just can't measure up.

    4 more months, only 4 more months of this gigantically depressing sh&tshow.

    of Cruz's speech. This was no surprise to the Trump crew.

    Martin Longman at Washington Monthly thinks that Trump, knowing that Cruz would not endorse him, planned the entire booing, etc. The New York delegation did start that booing at a very good time, followed so quickly by Trump;s appearance on the convention floor which completely drowned out the rest of what Cruz was saying.

    It's all TV.

    I was looking at the list.   You know I love Tyrion, right?  I love him.  But I would really like to see Jon Voight win for Micky Donavon.  He has created a character in Mickey Donavon that is as complex and real and insane and maddening and love able as any fictional character ever IMO created.

    Character is really something.  Ray (Schreiber) is a great character but in spite of definitely being an antihero he has lots of backstory and motivation and on and on that make you like him and make up root for him.  But Mickey.  Mickey is a waliking disaster area.  There is nothing to like about the guy.  He a cad.  A con man in every thing and to everyone. He destroys every thing and every life he touches.

    But you cant dislike him.  You can't not root for him.  It's is truly a remarkable piece of work as far as acting.  To take that character and make it into ne you actually care about.

    character on Shameless. Macy is great, but I cannot care about that guy. No joy in him at all.

    So...I cancelled my HBO/Showtime package on my table system - save $50 per month. And signed up with HBO Now via Apple TV for 14.95 a month, after a month free trial. Maybe I will do the same thing with the Showtime app when Masters of Sex comes back on, but maybe not. I found that Penny Dreadful was the only Showtime show I really liked. I kind of miss not just having the HBO stations on the TV to turn to, but I did not really watch much besides my predetermined shows, so Im adjusting to the new habit pretty well. A little annoying is that live shows like the Bill Maher show do not come to HBO Now until the next day. Guess they have to process them or something. So I do miss that.  But I will like the extra $$$ better.

    'Tis the location of the first summer vacation my wife took as a girl after her family moved from the Bay Area to Kansas City. She says it helped her know immediately she was destined to return to the west coast. ;-) (Her brother has a cabin on the lake though, they live in St. Louis.)

    90% of the GOP base won't get him a win. He needs 100% of the GOP base plus 11 to 12 points of the 12 to 13% of voters out there that are swing voters. I guess these pundits don't realize that 90% of the GOP base is 35% of the vote.

    He didn't say that 90% of the R vote was sufficient for Tr*mp to win; he said that many R votes were necessary for him to win, presumably along with other elements (this many independents, that many ostensible D's, etc.).

    reportedly looking for someone with national security experience.  Makes sense, with all the nonsense going on in the world.  The only 2 leading contenders that fit that requirement are Kaine (Senate Foreign Relations Committee) and Admiral Stavridis.  But maybe the leading contenders have all been head fakes and it's someone else altogether - Clinton / Kerry, Clinton / Panetta (for fun).

    If the veepstakes names turn out to be true, they suggest a return to triangulation, a distressing development. Having disposed of a challenge from the left, I hope Secretary Clinton does not tack hard to the right, but the two names suggest exactly that, perhaps in a futile attempt to reach out to disaffected white male Storm Trumpers.  That's a recipe for disaster. The only way to lose this election is to discourage turnout among democratic voters.

    Are won by reaching the middle. Lots of people in the middle have national security as a priority.  The left is with her.  The far left - the vast majority will be with her, but it wouldn't be in her best interest to court the tiny number who still want to stomp their feet, when most voters are in the middle.

    You call that "triangulation" -I call that good politics and listening to people (majority rule).

    Has a little bit of an effect to winning. It creates some buzz. And while an Elizabeth Warren might get the few Bernie supporters who are resisting to come over, a far lefty with one issue could push others in the middle or on the cusp away. And of course, a bad VP selection can hurt.

    She's going to pick someone who can take over as President if needed.  THAT's why she wants someone with a national security background.

    Wes Clark would be OK, but, as mentioned earlier, his age may work against his selection. And, he is not a new face.  Vilsack is being talked about, but I don't think it will be him. Warren seems less likely as do Castro, Booker and Perez. The Admiral is a possibility, but I think, it will be Kaine.  The campaign has, no doubt, been testing out these names in focus groups and polling.

    The middle has disappeared from U.S. politics. There are virtually no undecided voters.  What will count is enthusiasm, which leads to turnout, which leads to electoral votes.  When dems stay home (see all midterm elections), the enthusiastic minority wins.  I call that empiricism.

    Former Secretary of State and presumptive Democratic Presidential nominee Hillary Clinton will be in Orlando on Friday, the same day she is expected to announce her Vice-Presidential pick heading into next week's Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia.

    Clinton is scheduled for an event in Orlando before heading to a rally in Tampa, followed by another rally in South Florida on Saturday. One of the two rallies could serve as a coming out party for her Vice-Presidential pick.

    Warren is scheduled to be in Orlando on Saturday, where she will be the featured speaker at the National Conference of La Raza.

    I would think the choice could be announced Friday or Saturday depending on how the GOP convention ends Thursday. Ends well maybe Friday. Ends in a dumpster fire wait until Saturday.
